JOB OVERVIEW
The role of an EAL teacher is to provide an extensive and intensive program of studies for students who are defined as requiring teaching in English to enable them to acquire the academic language necessary for success in a rigorous, English language academic environment.
The EAL teacher is expected to implement and maintain teaching within established guidelines and standards, including WIDA standards and specific criteria and proficiency levels: Entering, Emerging, Developing, Expanding, Bridging and Reaching. Students receive intensive, targeted, and personalized support as they progress in their reading, listening, writing, and speaking classes according to their EAL levels.
The EAL Teacher will work closely with the ASC team to ensure that each student undergoes a thorough and accurate assessment and evaluation process for new enrollment in an appropriate and effective manner.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Collaborates with others (e.g. teachers, administrators, students, parents, and other school personnel, community organizations, etc.) for the purpose of implementing and maintaining a strong EAL program.
· Create lesson plans and administer assignments, assessments and testing to students
· Assist students with academic goals by develop effective progressive pathways for each student
· Help students develop study habits and guide students on studying skills, particularly for language learning
· Evaluate students’ progress, provide feedback and advise them strategically on language development
· Encourage students to participate in school activities and events
· Design events to promote the use of English and conduct various group activities to achieve basic conversational knowledge.
· Encourage students to practice English daily, and participate in student exchanges and field trips
· Implement WIDA standards, incorporating mathematics, science and literacy, into lesson planning.
· Teaches EAL program components, support needs and materials for the purpose of meeting student needs while complying with program
· Evaluates program activities and components for the purpose of ensuring that student needs are met while maintaining program and curriculum guidelines.
· Leads and/or participates in meetings, workshops and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform teaching to a high standard.
· Maintains a variety of detailed records in a variety of written and electronic formats for the purpose of meeting program reporting requirements and using data to inform teaching and learning
· Prepares a variety of program related reports in both manual and electronic formats for the purpose of documenting activities, information and ensuring program requirements are met in an effective and timely manner.
· Presents information to the school and community groups (e.g. program offerings, participation levels, recourses, etc.) for the purpose of promoting the EAL program, gaining feedback and complying with established quality assurance.
· Promotes involvement and understanding of the EAL program for the purpose of meeting the ongoing needs of, and encouraging participation in, the ESL programs and related course offerings.
· The EAL Teacher is responsible for reviewing and assessing students' performance across all enrollment tests. Based on these evaluations, the EAL Teacher will provide a comprehensive report with advice and recommendations regarding the student’s readiness to enroll as an official student at the school.
If needed, the EAL Teacher will conduct an additional direct interview with the students and/or their parents to provide further explanation about the academic aspects of the assessment and offer guidance. For students requiring additional support, the EAL Teacher will propose tailored improvement programs, particularly in EAL, to help them address their needs and prepare for retaking the tests if necessary. This role ensures that both students and parents are well-informed and supported for a successful academic start.
· Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the programs and schools.
REQUIREMENTS
· Bachelor’s degree in English language or Primary Education
· PGCE/QTS or equivalent teaching qualification.
· Qualification in teaching English as a Second Language
· Experience in teaching English as a Second Language in a school setting working with students with varying levels of English proficiency and a wide variety of home languages
· Experience in administering and analyzing the WIDA MODEL assessment
· Have experience with a variety of co-teaching models, especially “push in” models
· Be highly collaborative and able to work in a team setting, including Learning Support setting.
· Be highly adaptable and flexible with regards to scheduling needs.
· Experience supporting students as a Homeroom/Advisory teacher
· Have an understanding of current best practices in teaching and learning, especially standards-based instruction and assessment
